Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (Mississauga, ON) joined her compatriots Françoise Abanda (Montréal, QC) and Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON) in the quarter-finals of the Gatineau National Bank Challenger on Thursday.
Andreescu, who is playing in her first professional tournament, defeated fifth-seeded Czech Barbora Stefkova, ranked no. 289 in the world, 7-6(3) et 7-6(7) in the second round. Fifteen-year-old Andreescu is currently ranked no. 37 on the ITF junior rankings. She will next face world no. 213 Shuko Ayoma of Japan.
During Thursday’s evening session, Katherine Sebov (Toronto, ON) fell 6-4, 6-4 to second-seeded Mexican Marcela Zacarias. Zacarias has seen ranking improve by nearly 150 places since the start of the season and she has won four tournaments, including her first Challenger title. She will now meet her compatriot Victoria Rodriguez, who won two medals at the Pan Am Games in Toronto.
The quarter-finals will get undeway Friday at 11 a.m with Abanda taking on American Alexa Glatch followed by Zhao against American Lauren Albanese. Andreescu will play at 5 :30 p.m.
