Canadians Françoise Abanda (Montreal, QC) and Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON) advanced to the quarter-finals of the Gatineau National Bank Challenger on Wednesday.
Abanda played the feature evening match against her compatriot Natasha Irani and the 18-year-old came out on top 6-4, 6-3. She will face top-seeded American Alexa Glatch in Friday’s round of eight. Glatch was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Aussie Jessica Moore on Wednesday. The 25-year-old, ranked no. 155 in the world, has enjoyed previous success on Canadian soil as she was crowned champion of both the Saguenay and Toronto Challengers in 2008.
For her part, defeated Japan’s Akari Inoue 6-2, 6-3 to book her place in the quarter-finals for the fourth time this year on the ITF Pro Circuit. The world no. 252 will next face American Lauren Albanese.
Two Canadians will try and join their compatriots in the final eight on Thursday. Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (Mississauga, ON) will go up against Czech Barbora Stefkova at 11 am and Katherine Sebov (Toronto, ON) will play at 5 :30 p.m. against second-seeded Marcela Zacarias of Mexico.
